Intended Audience:
For healthcare professionals who either direct or participate in the management of cardiac arrest, stroke, or other cardiopulmonary emergencies in infant and pediatric populations. This includes personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, critical care/intensive care, and surgery such as Physicians, Nurses, and Paramedics, as well as others who need a PALS course completion card for a job or other requirement.

Objectives:

  • Perform high‐quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) per American Heart Association (AHA) basic life support (BLS) recommendations
  • Differentiate between patients who do and do not require immediate intervention
  • Recognize cardiopulmonary arrest early and begin CPR within 10 seconds
  • Apply team dynamics
  • Differentiate between respiratory distress and failure
  • Perform early interventions for respiratory distress and failure
  • Differentiate between compensated and decompensated (hypotensive) shock
  • Perform early interventions for the treatment of shock
  • Differentiate between unstable and stable patients with arrhythmias
  • Describe clinical characteristics of instability in patients with arrhythmias
  • Implement post–cardiac arrest management

Notes:
BLS is strongly emphasized during this class. Strong BLS Skills are necessary. Therefore, a current BLS card is required. EKG interpretation is required; it is not taught in this course. Reviewing EKG interpretation is recommended. Knowledge of PALS pharmacology is discussed in depth. Reviewing these drugs before class is strongly recommended.
A 50 question, multiple choice test is administered at the end of class that requires a passing score of 84% to complete the class.
